Saskatchewan Oat Milk Plant: Hygienic Decanter Case Study

A hygienic, skid-mounted HAUS DDE 2342 decanter clarifies oat milk for a plant-based milk producer in Saskatchewan.

The application

A plant-based milk producer in Saskatchewan makes oat and other vegetable milks. Before the milk is finished, the insoluble oat solids have to be separated out so that the milk is smooth.

A decanter centrifuge does this continuously: the oat solids leave as a moist cake and the clarified milk goes on to the next process step. The machine runs long days – 19 to 24 hours, seven days a week – so it had to be easy to clean and to look after.

Archer supplied the decanter as a complete plug-and-play skid, pre-piped in stainless steel and pre-wired, with an inline suspended-solids sensor on the clarified milk so that the PLC can adjust the machine to the quality target.

What Archer supplied

  • One HAUS DDE 2342 dual-drive decanter centrifuge: duplex 2205 bowl, 304 stainless wetted parts, tungsten carbide scroll protection, 7.5 kW main drive and 4 kW back-drive
  • Cover modified with nozzle connections for clean-in-place, motorized flush valves and flush connections
  • SYDEX progressive cavity feed pump in 316L stainless with food-grade EPDM stator and 2″ tri-clamp connections
  • Carbon steel skid, powder coated, with Sch 10 stainless piping and valves – one plug-and-play unit
  • Endress+Hauser Turbimax CUS51D suspended-solids sensor with air-blast cleaning and a Liquiline CM442 transmitter on the clarified milk line
  • NEMA 4X control panel with Beckhoff PLC, 15″ touch screen, VFDs for both drives and the feed pump
  • Solids and liquid discharge chutes, special tools, one-year spare parts kit, start-up and commissioning

Stainless steel piping, valves and feed connections on the oat milk decanter skid
Hygienic piping. Stainless piping and tri-clamp connections on the skid.
Oat fibre solids discharged by the decanter centrifuge
Oat solids. The fibre leaves the decanter as a moist cake.
Stainless steel NEMA 4X control panel with touch screen for the oat milk decanter
Control panel. Beckhoff PLC and touch screen in a stainless NEMA 4X enclosure.
Decanter skid with stainless steel discharge piping in the plant
Installed. The skid installed in the process hall.
